So I saw a family with some kids leaving the grocery store, and they got into a shiny new Honda Odyssey (those things are $$$). And I’m sure that they received child tax credits, I mean, why wouldn’t they? They certainly qualified for them. So I glared at them and thought, “have you no shame??”

is this against the law or against the Halacha? If they did not lie to get these things , then its not against the law or Halacha. Does it pass the “smell test”

We have Gedarim for things that are not against Halacha, but are not in the spirit of Halcha

Can you explain to me why it doesn’t “smell good”?

Put aside Kollel, jew, etc and just stam a person, would you approve of it or complain they were stealing from the government?

A Kollel family should be an example of the proper way to live and be a kiddish hashem. Playing a game with hud does not put kollel families in a positive light

the question should be is it better to work at a respectable job or do things that while not illegal or anti-torah to the letter of the law, have a whiff of wrongness

Like is it Ok to use section 8 to pay for rent on a house owned by your father-in-law, its legal and not against Halcha, but it certainly doesnt smell good. if you need to do such things to learn in kollel, maybe its better you work

Pot is known to help with Glaucoma and something called wasting disease. When you get Chemo, many people lose their appetities and cannot keep food down. Pot helps you maintain your appetite and keep your food down without nausea

Pot really isnt anymore dangerous than Alchol or Cigarettes. Im not saying you should smoke pot, you shouldnt. But Cigarettes and Alchol kill more than pot does.

Cirrhosiss of the liver and other Alchol related diseases kill alot as does cigarette related diseases

I know you want to help, but you will likely fail. Being an NCSY counselor is not the same as being a professional.

When you fail you will not feel good and feel as a failure yourself even though you did nothing wrong. You can also do more harm than good.

Please run away from this situation.

People who learn in Kollel dont bother themselves with everyday concerns. While some might think this is deseriable. It also means you bother yourself with such things as paying your nessasary bills. Feeding your family , Spending time with your children

The Greeks were not Monolithic and Chazal acted differently to different Greeks.

Alexander the Great (Who was a Macedonian, not a Greek) was welcomed by Chazal and Alexander is still considered a jewish name.

After Alexander died, his empire was split in 3 parts. The 2 main parts concerned jews were the Egyptian Greeks (The Ptolomies) and the Syrian Greek (The Selucides–(Antiochus in Hebrew)) . the border between the Ptolomies and the Selucidies was Judea. The Ptolmoies were generally hospitible to the jews and allowed them freedom. It was the Selucidies who were brutal and did not allow judaism to flourish. it was under the Ptlomoies that the Septugent was written.

Abandoned cemetaries are a problem in NYC as well. Many of these places ran out of money years ago and have basically been abandoned as they have no source of income and many people buried there have no decendents

Besides, what is a Goyish food?

Food we dont have a “Mesorah” to eat, not because of kashruth issues, but because it wasnt eaten in Europe by our ancestors.

When I was referring to goyish music, I was referring to people who take non-jewish music and “make it kosher”

And I have heard ‘Dvar Torahs” that claim that eating “Goyish Foods” even when kosher Damages your neshama

the whole idea of Chukas HaGoyim. There certanly is a Halacha not to follow the ways of the Goyim, however the line where we are allowed to follow the Goyim straddles the dividing line.

We are speaking mostly English here which is Chukas Hagoyim. many forbid things like Sports, Music taken from Non-jewish sources, Many frown upon non-jewish foods. Obviously we do things that are Chukas Hagoyim like driving a Car or using a Telephone

many things people say are Halchas are actually Chumras or hashkafas

    For example?

Mode of Dress or Language spoken.

It is not a HALACHA to speak Yiddish over a “Goyish” Language or its not an averirah to dress western style (Assuming tzniut isnt a concern)

I’ve been to Bedford Ave. in Brooklyn for a Chassunah and don’t remember seeing anything like that. Mostly small apartment buildings, IIRC.

Not Bedford Ave around the BQE in Williamsburg. Bedford Ave Around Ave J in Flatbush. Almost every single house is a knockdown and a McMansion

we will have to redirect some of the hundreds of millions of dollars spent on cruises, weekends and Pesach in China towards Yeshivos, and it will be done.

I would like to know how you can force people to stop spending money on vacations that you deem execessive to give the money to yeshivas?

Are we going to stop people from spending money on Expensive Cars?

And if you dont think thats enough, what about expensive houses? Just drive down Bedford Ave Area and see multi-million dollar houses…Are we going to stop the building of these fancy McMansions?

There is this feeling in Charedi society that a few geverim will cover the shortfalls in yeshivas and that is sort of what is happening now, but as more and more learn and families get bigger, there will be less and less geverim and they will need to use their family fortunes for their own families rather than communal needs.

Personally I dont know the Reichmans fortune, but there will come a time where they just cannot support everyone else, no matter how much they have

The bigger issue is not if the parents cant pay the tutiton, but if the School cannot pay expenses and is forced to close. There are plenty of bills that have to be paid or else school will close (I think Ive heard of some schools already closing because they could not meet expenses like mortgages or payroll for non-rabbis (Like Janitors or cooks)..(A Rabbi would not go to the Labor department for back-pay a Janitor would))

Alot of things the frum community is getting people think is mandated. Its not mandated to get busing if you live 1 mile from the School and its not mandated to send the special ed kids to a Public school in Kiryat Joel.

If the state comes in these things will be cut.

Also School Taxes are not State Taxes, they are local taxes

The system is more than a generation old, and they said the same thing last generation. Also, even if it has to alternate generations, that’s still more than not having it at all.

Its really only on the second generation for most people and a few 3rd generation, It will collpase financially if something is not done. Relying on government handouts is not a viable solution

Vienna is not a Chabad outpost, its actually quite chassidish. It sort of reminds me of Antwerp except on a bit smaller scale (Antwerp is a small city and has more jews than Vienna)

There are at least 4 or 5 kosher restaurants and Chassidic shteibel, I am sure there are Mikvahs there too.
