So I saw a family with some kids leaving the grocery store, and they got into a shiny new Honda Odyssey (those things are $$$). And I’m sure that they received child tax credits, I mean, why wouldn’t they? They certainly qualified for them. So I glared at them and thought, “have you no shame??”
is this against the law or against the Halacha? If they did not lie to get these things , then its not against the law or Halacha. Does it pass the “smell test”
January 6, 2016 4:31 pm at 4:31 pm in reply to: Are Kollel Folks Better Jews Than The Rest Of us? #1174475zahavasdadParticipantWe have Gedarim for things that are not against Halacha, but are not in the spirit of Halcha
January 6, 2016 3:29 pm at 3:29 pm in reply to: Are Kollel Folks Better Jews Than The Rest Of us? #1174470zahavasdadParticipantCan you explain to me why it doesn’t “smell good”?
Put aside Kollel, jew, etc and just stam a person, would you approve of it or complain they were stealing from the government?
A Kollel family should be an example of the proper way to live and be a kiddish hashem. Playing a game with hud does not put kollel families in a positive light
zahavasdadParticipantYou have alot to learn about relationships and dating
January 5, 2016 5:24 pm at 5:24 pm in reply to: Are Kollel Folks Better Jews Than The Rest Of us? #1174456zahavasdadParticipantthe question should be is it better to work at a respectable job or do things that while not illegal or anti-torah to the letter of the law, have a whiff of wrongness
Like is it Ok to use section 8 to pay for rent on a house owned by your father-in-law, its legal and not against Halcha, but it certainly doesnt smell good. if you need to do such things to learn in kollel, maybe its better you work
zahavasdadParticipantI really thought your name Moi Aussi meant I am Australlian
zahavasdadParticipantMoi Aussi
Down Under is the nickname for Australia, it is not bad at all.
Aussi or some similar spelling is the nickname for people from Australia
zahavasdadParticipantInstead of asking for dating advice on Yeshiva world news, why not ask on Jdate
zahavasdadParticipantIf you want to makarev someone who is OTD, Calling them a retard is not the best way to go at it

Bingo. there you go

Pot is known to help with Glaucoma and something called wasting disease. When you get Chemo, many people lose their appetities and cannot keep food down. Pot helps you maintain your appetite and keep your food down without nausea
zahavasdadParticipantMoi Aussi, I am guessing you you are from down under
In the US its called Medical Marijunana not Medicinal Cannabis
zahavasdadParticipantMsPrincess
Alcohol and Cigarettes can destroy a person is legal.
Also Gambling can destroy a person and that is legal too
zahavasdadParticipantYou need to answer this question honestly, Do you want to help this boy because you want to Kiruv him or because you like him?
zahavasdadParticipantPot really isnt anymore dangerous than Alchol or Cigarettes. Im not saying you should smoke pot, you shouldnt. But Cigarettes and Alchol kill more than pot does.
Cirrhosiss of the liver and other Alchol related diseases kill alot as does cigarette related diseases

I know you want to help, but you will likely fail. Being an NCSY counselor is not the same as being a professional.
When you fail you will not feel good and feel as a failure yourself even though you did nothing wrong. You can also do more harm than good.
Please run away from this situation.
January 3, 2016 3:42 pm at 3:42 pm in reply to: Why do working people tend to not be as ruchniyus as Kollel people? #1176969zahavasdadParticipantPeople who learn in Kollel dont bother themselves with everyday concerns. While some might think this is deseriable. It also means you bother yourself with such things as paying your nessasary bills. Feeding your family , Spending time with your children
December 30, 2015 6:25 pm at 6:25 pm in reply to: MODERN ORTHODOXY: The Fundamental problems #1119199zahavasdadParticipant100 years after the Chanukah Story the Greeks were insignificant, it was the Romans who were the world power
December 30, 2015 3:17 pm at 3:17 pm in reply to: MODERN ORTHODOXY: The Fundamental problems #1119194zahavasdadParticipantThe Greeks were not Monolithic and Chazal acted differently to different Greeks.
Alexander the Great (Who was a Macedonian, not a Greek) was welcomed by Chazal and Alexander is still considered a jewish name.
After Alexander died, his empire was split in 3 parts. The 2 main parts concerned jews were the Egyptian Greeks (The Ptolomies) and the Syrian Greek (The Selucides–(Antiochus in Hebrew)) . the border between the Ptolomies and the Selucidies was Judea. The Ptolmoies were generally hospitible to the jews and allowed them freedom. It was the Selucidies who were brutal and did not allow judaism to flourish. it was under the Ptlomoies that the Septugent was written.
zahavasdadParticipantAbandoned cemetaries are a problem in NYC as well. Many of these places ran out of money years ago and have basically been abandoned as they have no source of income and many people buried there have no decendents

Food we dont have a “Mesorah” to eat, not because of kashruth issues, but because it wasnt eaten in Europe by our ancestors.

December 29, 2015 4:35 pm at 4:35 pm in reply to: MODERN ORTHODOXY: The Fundamental problems #1119149zahavasdadParticipantWhen I was referring to goyish music, I was referring to people who take non-jewish music and “make it kosher”
And I have heard ‘Dvar Torahs” that claim that eating “Goyish Foods” even when kosher Damages your neshama
December 29, 2015 4:21 pm at 4:21 pm in reply to: MODERN ORTHODOXY: The Fundamental problems #1119145zahavasdadParticipantthe whole idea of Chukas HaGoyim. There certanly is a Halacha not to follow the ways of the Goyim, however the line where we are allowed to follow the Goyim straddles the dividing line.
We are speaking mostly English here which is Chukas Hagoyim. many forbid things like Sports, Music taken from Non-jewish sources, Many frown upon non-jewish foods. Obviously we do things that are Chukas Hagoyim like driving a Car or using a Telephone
December 29, 2015 3:50 pm at 3:50 pm in reply to: MODERN ORTHODOXY: The Fundamental problems #1119140zahavasdadParticipantmany things people say are Halchas are actually Chumras or hashkafas
For example?
Mode of Dress or Language spoken.
It is not a HALACHA to speak Yiddish over a “Goyish” Language or its not an averirah to dress western style (Assuming tzniut isnt a concern)

December 29, 2015 2:16 pm at 2:16 pm in reply to: MODERN ORTHODOXY: The Fundamental problems #1119131zahavasdadParticipantYou even said “most halachos”! there is no such thing in orthodox Judaism as keeping “most halachos”!
There are Halachas and there are Chumras and Hashkafas. many things people say are Halchas are actually Chumras or hashkafas
zahavasdadParticipantAlot of well known valid Hechshers will certify places that are open on SHabbos if they are not owned by Jews
zahavasdadParticipantIf you do a google maps for Bedford Ave and Avenue J you will see a sampling of the fancy houses. It doesnt even look like Brooklyn. Its very residential
zahavasdadParticipantI’ve been to Bedford Ave. in Brooklyn for a Chassunah and don’t remember seeing anything like that. Mostly small apartment buildings, IIRC.
Not Bedford Ave around the BQE in Williamsburg. Bedford Ave Around Ave J in Flatbush. Almost every single house is a knockdown and a McMansion
December 28, 2015 4:50 pm at 4:50 pm in reply to: MODERN ORTHODOXY: The Fundamental problems #1119103zahavasdadParticipantOpen Orthodoxy is not the same as Modern Orthodoxy and people need to stop equating the 2.
How many charedim want to be associated with Neteuri karta?
zahavasdadParticipantwe will have to redirect some of the hundreds of millions of dollars spent on cruises, weekends and Pesach in China towards Yeshivos, and it will be done.
I would like to know how you can force people to stop spending money on vacations that you deem execessive to give the money to yeshivas?
Are we going to stop people from spending money on Expensive Cars?
And if you dont think thats enough, what about expensive houses? Just drive down Bedford Ave Area and see multi-million dollar houses…Are we going to stop the building of these fancy McMansions?

zahavasdadParticipantIf R’L you got a Rolex Watch for your Chanukah Present. I would be willing to suffer and remove it from your hands and give it a new home
zahavasdadParticipantThere are not that many Jewish Billionaires and most of them are not giving money to Yeshivas. I would not bet on people like Mark Zuckerberg , Michael Bloomberg or Mickey Arisol giving Maaser to Brisk anytime soon and Im not sure that Shelden Adelson (The Worlds richest jew) would either
zahavasdadParticipantCTLawyer
There is this feeling in Charedi society that a few geverim will cover the shortfalls in yeshivas and that is sort of what is happening now, but as more and more learn and families get bigger, there will be less and less geverim and they will need to use their family fortunes for their own families rather than communal needs.
Personally I dont know the Reichmans fortune, but there will come a time where they just cannot support everyone else, no matter how much they have
zahavasdadParticipantThe bigger issue is not if the parents cant pay the tutiton, but if the School cannot pay expenses and is forced to close. There are plenty of bills that have to be paid or else school will close (I think Ive heard of some schools already closing because they could not meet expenses like mortgages or payroll for non-rabbis (Like Janitors or cooks)..(A Rabbi would not go to the Labor department for back-pay a Janitor would))
December 27, 2015 1:58 pm at 1:58 pm in reply to: School Board Monitors in Lakewood & East Ramapo #1157083zahavasdadParticipantAlot of things the frum community is getting people think is mandated. Its not mandated to get busing if you live 1 mile from the School and its not mandated to send the special ed kids to a Public school in Kiryat Joel.
If the state comes in these things will be cut.
Also School Taxes are not State Taxes, they are local taxes
December 27, 2015 12:02 am at 12:02 am in reply to: MODERN ORTHODOXY: The Fundamental problems #1119078zahavasdadParticipantWhen I was in Israel, I notice it actually was a bit harder sometimes to tell the difference between Charedi and Dati Leumi. I saw people who appeared to be DL but with Peyes. Something you dont see in the US. Yeshivish Charedim in the US dont usually work although the Wives do
zahavasdadParticipantThe system is more than a generation old, and they said the same thing last generation. Also, even if it has to alternate generations, that’s still more than not having it at all.
Its really only on the second generation for most people and a few 3rd generation, It will collpase financially if something is not done. Relying on government handouts is not a viable solution

zahavasdadParticipantDY
So Chicken for shabbos is covered, but Roast Beef for SHabbos isnt covered?
zahavasdadParticipantSome smaller cities in Europe are Chabad outposts, Prague sort of is, Venice for sure is. Vienna sort of shocked me. I was very surprised to see Chassidish looking people just walking in the street and taking the trams
zahavasdadParticipantVienna is not a Chabad outpost, its actually quite chassidish. It sort of reminds me of Antwerp except on a bit smaller scale (Antwerp is a small city and has more jews than Vienna)
There are at least 4 or 5 kosher restaurants and Chassidic shteibel, I am sure there are Mikvahs there too.
